The Wei Wai Kum First Nation (Campbell River Indian Band) is in advanced Stage 5 negotiations of the BC Treaty Process and is actively negotiating a Self-Government Treaty Agreement (SGTA) with Canada and British Columbia.
Our goal is to affirm and implement our inherent right to self-government and restore full jurisdiction, authority, and decision-making in core areas of governance — a process that reflects our authority as a self-determining Nation and our commitment to moving beyond the Indian Act. Wei Wai Kum has successfully assumed control over land administration through our Land Code and exercises taxation authority under our laws, and we continue to expand our jurisdiction.
The primary residential community of Wei Wai Kum First Nation is located in Campbell River, within the Ligʷiłdaxʷ territory. In addition to the main community, the Nation holds several remote reserve lands throughout the territory. Wei Wai Kum currently has a membership of over 900 people.
The community, Elected Chief and Council, Hereditary Leadership, and advisors guide our objectives to:
- Recognize and protect Aboriginal rights and title
- Return lands to the Nations
- Recognize Wei Wai Kum governance and jurisdiction
- Provide a solid foundation, land base, and economic base that provide a better future for our members
In 2019, Wei Wai Kum reached Stage 5 – Negotiation to Finalize A Treaty.
2024: Wei Wai Kum Advances Treaty Negotiations independently.
Wei Wai Kum is currently negotiating a Self Government Agreement as a step toward a more comprehensive Treaty
