Wei Wai Kum, the Campbell River Indian Band, is in Stage 5 of the BC Treaty Process. Between 2014 and 2024, Wei Wai Kum and Kwiakah collaborated on treaty negotiations. Previously, Wei Wai Kum, Kwiakah, and We Wai Kai were all part of the Ligʷiłdaxʷ Treaty Society. However, in May 2024, Wei Wai Kum decided to pursue its goals independently as a separate Nation.
The primary residential community of Wei Wai Kum is located in Campbell River. There are several remote reserves within the Ligʷiłdaxʷ territory for the Wei Wai Kum Nation. Currently, Wei Wai Kum has over 900 members.
The community, Elected Chief and Council, and advisors guide our Treaty Team and objectives to:
- Recognize and protect aboriginal rights and title
- Return lands to the Nations
- Recognize Wei Wai Kum governance and jurisdiction
- Provide a solid foundation, land base, and economic base that provide a better future for our members
In 2019, Wei Wai Kum reached Stage 5 – Negotiation to Finalize A Treaty.
2024: Wei Wai Kum Advances Treaty Negotiations independently.
Historically, Wei Wai Kum had thousands of members. Due to the impacts of colonialism, today there are roughly 900 members.
